32 years ago, one of the most popular video games of all times was released. That’s why we want to celebrate World Tetris Day on June 6th! For this reason, we created our own little game of Tetris with Tinkerbots modules!
Tetris was developed by Russian game designer Alexey Pajitnov at the Computer Center in Moscow to test new hardware. The game became so popular among his colleagues that they created a version for IBM computers. But the real breakthrough to success came in 1989 when Nintendo’s Game Boy was launched. The combination of the handheld device and the puzzle game was magical. Until today, more than 170 million copies of Tetris were sold.
Although the game is so successful, the principle of Tetris is quite simple: Different shaped blocks are falling from the top of the screen and you have to rotate and position them, so that they create a horizontal line without gaps. The line then disappears and lets you earn points. With an increasing speed of falling blocks, the game ends if the blocks stack up to the top of the screen.
Over the years many different versions of Tetris have been released. You can find versions of the game for Android smartphones, NES, Sega Mega Drive and many other systems. It was announced that even a screen adaption for Tetris will be shot in China in 2017.
